Camp Mac

Feb 29, 2008

Pros - Excellent location, great food, friendly staff, lifelong memories, character-building, friendship, personal growth.

Cons - Only 24 hours in a day, camp term ending, won't take adults as a campers (hah!)

Really, It's impossible to find a negative when it comes to Camp Mac. I spent five summers there as a camper and five as a counselor and I count that year (yes, a total year of my lifetime) as the greatest 52 weeks of my life. With many summer camps being a corporate run entity, a true family run camp is hard to find. The McBrides have something special at the base of Cheaha Mountain and with many McBrides, many in name and some not, still living there it's nice to know that the Camp will be a family-run business for years to come.

Camp Mac provides a structured place for children to experience two-fold growth. First is physical growth in a number of activities each day that they likely won't get to take part in during the school year. Be it horseback riding, water skiing or something like archery the abundance of activities for a child to partake contributes to a well-rounded childhood. How many children each year get home and, instead of picking the XBox360 controller, take their parents out to pick up a new tennis racket or baseball glove?

It also provides a place of mental growth as they learn what they are capable of when put into a new peer group without the constant supervision of their parents. Children can grow comfortable in their academic surroundings where their classmates can remain largely the same year-to-year. At camp children must adapt to a new set of bunkmates each summer. That sort of adaptation and social integration can better prepare a child as he/she ages and grows their circle of friends.

The camp motto is : Safety, Fun, Instruction and it absolutely is true.

Camp Mac will provide an environment for your child to safely enjoy being a child while still learning a wealth of knowledge during their few months outside of the classroom each summer.
